Electrolyte and Volume Changes in Fluids Injected into the Peritoneal Cavity *
نویسنده
چکیده
Theexperiments here presented were planned to permit a study of the qualitative and quantitative changes that take place in certain types of fluids which are often injected into the peritoneal cavity or subcutaneous tissues for therapeutic purposes. Data were obtained which show the alterations in the electrolyte pattern and in the volume which occur during the process of absorption from the peritoneal cavity. The solutions studied were isotonic sodium chloride, glucose, and a mixture of sodium chloride and sodium bicarbonate. While the subject of peritoneal absorption has had the benefit of considerable attention over a long period of years, an accurate ionic study has been prevented, until relatively recently, by the lack of suitable chemical methods, especially those for estimation of total base and of bicarbonate. It ought to be possible now to determine to what extent ions, rather than salts as such, diffuse away from and into the peritoneal cavity; to study more carefully than has been possible heretofore the mechanism of equilibrium between the plasma and the peritoneal fluid.

The Relation of Inflammation to the Molecular Structure of Carbon Compounds Soluble in the Fluids of the Body
The peritoneal, like the pleural cavity, gives opportunity to measure with adequate accuracy the activity of inflammatory reactions defined by movement of fluid within the cavity, by migration of leucocytes into it, and by exudation of proteins from the plasma. The activity of inflammatory reactions caused by saccharides or by alcohols that were tested varied in accord with their molecular weig...
متن کاملConventional versus biocompatible peritoneal dialysis fluids: more questions than answers?
The most important challenge in peritoneal dialysis (PD) is long-term preservation of peritoneal membrane structure and function. Introduction of dialysis fluids into the peritoneal cavity induces changes. These changes are related to duration of dialysis, occurrence of peritonitis and components of the dialysis solution. Bioincompatibility is considered to be the major cause of the development...
متن کاملCytotoxic Glucose Degradation Products in Fluids for Peritoneal Dialysis
During the standard heat sterilization process of the lactate–buffered peritoneal dialysis solutions, glucose (an osmotic active substance) degrades to form compounds called glucose degradation products which are cytotoxic and affect the survival of the peritoneal membrane. This case presentation is based on an observation of 224 aseptic peritonitis cases of unknown etiology. For the purpose of...
متن کاملEfficacy of a Hypotonic Treatment for Peritoneal Dissemination from Gastric Cancer Cells: An In Vivo Evaluation
The aim of the present study was to determine the efficacy of a hypotonic treatment for peritoneal dissemination from gastric cancer cells using an in vivo model. We firstly evaluated the toxicity of a peritoneal injection of distilled water (DW) (2 mL for 3 days) in mice. Macroscopic and microscopic examinations revealed that the peritoneal injection of DW did not severely damage the abdominal...
